Introduction
TheInstituteofActuarieswasformedin1848.On8July1998theinstitutemarkedits150thAnniversary.TheRoyalCharterofIncorporationwasgrantedtotheInstitutein1884.TheCharterdefinestheobjectsoftheInstituteas: a.inthepublicinteresttopromoteknowledgeandresearchinallmattersrelevanttoactuarialscienceanditsapplication; b.toregulatethepracticebyitsMembersoftheprofessionofactuary; c.topromote,upholdanddevelopthehigheststandardsofprofessionaleducation,training,knowledge,practiceandconductamongstactuariesandinpursuanceofthisobjecttopublishcodesofconductandpracticeandguidancenotesofallkinds; d.topromotethestatusoftheactuarialprofessionandofthosewhoareengagedinitinanycapacity; e.tobearegulatorybodyforthepurposeofanylegislationandwhenappropriateforsuchpurposestoregulateorgovernthecarryingonofanyactivityortypeofbusinessby,oranyaspectoftheaffairsof,actuariesaremembers(whetherwithorwithoutothers),bodiescorporateofwhichactuariesaremembersordirectors(whetherwithorwithoutothers)andforpurposesconnectedtherewith;and f.todoallsuchotherthingsasmaybeconsideredtobeincidentalorconducivetotheaboveobjectsoranyofthem. Since1887theInstitutehasbeenhousedinStapleInn,apartfromabreakofelevenyearsfollowingthedestructionofStapleInnHallbyaflyingbombinAugust1944. Anumberofeminentmen,manyofwhomwereFellowsoftheRoyalSociety,playedapartintheearlydevelopmentofactuarialscience,butforaconsiderableperiodinthelatenineteenthandearlytwentiethcenturiesactuarialtalentswerealmostwhollyconcentratedonthepracticalproblemstowhichtheexpansionoflifeassurancewasgivingrise.Indeed,lifeassuranceisstilltheprincipalsphereofoccupationofactuaries,ascanbeseenfromtheAnalysisofOccupationsonpage24oftheMember'sHandbook,butagrowingnumberarebecomingconcernedwiththeapplicationofstatisticaltheorytotheproblemsofgeneralinsurance(fire,accident,marine,etc.). Inrecentyearstherehasbeenarapidincreaseinthenumberofactuariesinwhole-timeconsultingpractice,largelyastheresultofthegreatextensionofprivatelyinvestedpensionschemes.ActuariesarealsoemployedinGovernmentservicebothathomeandabroad;intheUnitedKingdomtheyaremostlyintheGovernmentActuary'sDepartment.Inindustryandcommercetoo,actuariescanbefoundinavarietyofactivities,andsomeoccupytopmanagementpostsasdirectorsandchairmenofcompanies.TheStockExchangeandotherfieldsofinvestmentactivityprovideobviousoutletsforactuarialexpertise,particularlywiththerapidgrowthofinstitutionalinvestment.
